Proposed developments in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia puts the town at risk of losing its UNESCO World Heritage Site standing.

Lunenburg NS at risk
  • Friends of Blockhouse Hill [Lunenburg] website
  • The Lunenburg (Nova Scotia) Town Council met to an overflow capacity crowd May 9, 2023. The agenda included approval of the budget. Unlike previous years, the budget presentation meeting last week did NOT allow public comment. Council finally backed down and allowed comments May 9. Despite a multitude of concerns raised, the budget passed without changes.
Thom Barclay's presentation (pdf 7 pages) on behalf of Friends of Blockhouse Hill resulted in three minutes of applause including a 90-second standing ovation.
  • Mary Knickle's Battle for Lunenburg's Soul — YouTube 3:49 received 1000+ visits in its first 24 hours
"The Battle for Lunenburg's Soul is a metaphor that likens Lunenburg to an old schooner. The song is a flare rising up out of the sea. It is a call to action, to raise the flag, and take note of the quick decisions that are being made today. Tall ships used cannons, today we use pen and paper, petitions and protests."

Loopholes in The Provincial Parks Act gives the Minister of Natural Resources and Renewables and the Cabinet a high degree of discretion when it comes to the fate of provincial parks in Nova Scotia, leaving these important places vulnerable to private interests.

It's critical that we strengthen the Provincial Parks Act so special places like West Mabou Beach Provincial Park and Owls Head Provincial Park remain protected in perpetuity. Please take a moment to stand up for our parks:
